Government of Nepal invites NCCN
Monday 06th of August 2007 [ ??????, ???? २१, २०६४ ]

NCCN General Secretary Dr.K.B. Rokaya was invited by the Peace and Reconstruction Ministry, Government of Nepal to participate in a consultation organized by the ministry on 2 August 07 to discuss on the Bill for the formation of the Truth and Reconciliation  Commission. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Rokaya expressed his view on the objective and scope of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He said that the main objective and purpose of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is to bring out the truth about human rights violations, abuses and crimes committed during conflict, to make the perpetrators realize their mistakes, to give the victims an opportunity to be heard and to bring peace and reconciliation. Citing examples from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa, he emphatically said that the purpose of forming the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is not to identify those committed human rights violations and crime and punish them.

Large numbers of participants including human rights activist, members of the civil society and NGOs, lawyers, journalists, representatives of political parties and Government officials participated in the consultation. The programme was chaired by Honorable Minister of Peace and Reconstruction, Mr. Ram Chandra Paudel.
